Waxahachie. What a name! I recall the first time I saw the name on a map thinking, "how on earth does one pronounce that!?" I later learned after moving to Waxahachie and receiving a lesson from the locals that it is pronounced like "wa(l)ks-a-hachie, and now you know too! Waxahachie is a city rooted in history and tradition and full of friendly people and great schools. John Houston Custom Homes is proud to currently be building in 10 communities in Waxahachie all of which have a little something different making it easy to find the perfect home for you in this growing town.
Just a short 30 minute drive from downtown, Dallas, Waxahachie has many of the conveniences of a larger city with a small town feel. Here are 5 great reasons that I have found to call a John Houston Custom Home in Waxahachie home.
1. Getzendaner Park:
If you are like me and my family, you like to be outdoors and moving. Getzendaner Park is a 33 acre park centrally located in Waxahachie with multiple play areas, picnic areas and long trails perfect for running, biking or walking through the heavily treed park. Its a quiet spot to relax or perfect place to exercise. Its a must see!
2. Friday Night Lights:
Waxahachie ISD is an exemplary school district both academically and athletically speaking. Its amazing to watch the community rally around and support the students be it buying tickets to the high school play, sporting a yard sign representing their favorite member of the band or my favorite, the mass amount of people that show up to support the sporting events like football games. Go Indians! It is very family focused and people friendly and a community that invests so heavily in their youth speaks volumes.
3. The Dove's Nest
Food is important! It's the first thing I get the scoop on when I visit or move to a new city and boy was I blown away when I discovered The Dove's Nest in downtown Waxahachie. This little place set in the back of a quaint little shop with all kinds of awesome finds is open only for lunch and there is usually a crowd but for good reason. A small menu of fresh items like salads, soups sandwiches and amazing desserts in very intimate setting make this location truly unique. I must say the buttermilk pie is delicious and worth making the trip alone!
4. Historic Downtown Waxahachie
Currently undergoing a revitalization, the downtown area is rich with history and tradition. Its filled with unique small businesses and restaurants and perfect for strolling around on the weekends. The center features the original courthouse which is a striking historic building built in 1897. There are many tours including ghost tours available to give you the historic details of the buildings and the area. Be on the look out for farmers markets and out door events like movies in the square in the warmer seasons.
5. Scarborough Renaissance Fair
Every spring, Waxahachie is home to a 16th century style celebration that features, food, crafts, fun and live entertainment including jousting! Fun for the whole family while taking a step back in time! Learn more and buy tickets for this years fair here.
